Is It Easier To Enter The USA Through The Canadian Border?

CA_USA

If you’re thinking about crossing into the United States, you might be wondering whether the Canadian border might offer an easier entry point. You’re not alone in this logic, and many migrants have entered Canada only to immediately attempt to cross the northern border into the United States. But is this really the best course of action? Are migrants having any success with this strategy? Are there more effective options, such as working with a qualified immigration attorney? Let’s find out:

There’s No Doubt About It: Crossings at the Northern Border Are Surging

On January 29th of 2023, it was reported that crossings at the Canadian border had surged dramatically, with a staggering 743% rise between October 1st and December 31st of 2022. The area that is seeing the most activity is the so-called “Swanton Sector,” a stretch of the border that includes the borders of New York, Vermont, and New Hampshire. A total of 441 people were detailed by the US Border Patrol after attempting to cross the Canadian border during this period. It was later discovered that these individuals had flown to Canada from 19 different countries with the specific goal of crossing into the United States.

Border Patrol representatives also revealed that 14 people gave up their effort to cross the border, while a further 135 people managed to evade the authorities and are now living illegally in the United States. These crossings can be just as dangerous as crossing on the southern border – sometimes more so. On January 19th, a family from India was found frozen to death near the North Dakota border with Canada. The fatalities included a teen and an infant.

A Border Patrol representative warned migrants about the dangers of the northern border, stating: “Reckless endangerment: In freezing temperatures over uncertain terrain, families with children, from just a few months old, continue to illegally cross from Canada into the US The risk to human lives – including Border Patrol agents – is increasing.” Those caught can also face years in prison and fines of hundreds of thousands of dollars. That being said, illegal crossings at the southern border are still far more common, with 700,000 reported encounters during the same time period.

At the end of the day, the risks associated with illegal crossings are simply too great – whether you choose the southern or the northern border. It is much better to work with a lawyer and go through the proper legal process.
