DHS Announces New $1,000 Parole Fee for Certain Immigrants

ImmigrationPolicy

Immigration is becoming more expensive for many who want to start new lives in the United States, and the $1,000 parole fee recently announced by the DHS is an example of this. What is this new $1,000 fee? Who will have to pay it? What is the justification behind this new cost? These are questions you might want to explore with an experienced immigration lawyer in Palm Beach Gardens.

Why Did the DHS Create a New $1,000 Fee for Immigrants?

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) states that this new $1,000 fee is necessary to combat “rampant fraud” within the parole system. To understand why this new fee is important, one must first understand how “parole” works in the United States immigration system.

Parole is the process of allowing an “inadmissible alien” into the United States from an inspection facility. Although these individuals are technically not allowed to enter the United States, they may be permitted to remain in the country so they can apply for legal admission.

UCIS notes that immigrants are often granted parole due to humanitarian reasons. People may also be paroled into the nation if there is some kind of public benefit to the American people.

Those granted parole will now have to pay a fee of $1,000. The fee went into effect on October 16th of 2025, and it applies to all “aliens” admitted under INA section 212(d)(5)(A). This applies not only to parole, but also to “re-parole,” parole in place, and parole from DHS custody. Some exceptions may apply, and these may be worth exploring with an experienced immigration lawyer.

Is Immigration Parole Fraud Really a Problem?

Most sources admit that immigration parole fraud is a real issue in the United States. Predatory groups often take advantage of immigrants seeking parole, charging high fees to “sponsor” these individuals. In 2024, the Washington Times reported that gang members and scammers were using the names of deceased individuals to sponsor people for parole. The system was also criticized for being unable to vet sponsors of immigrants seeking parole. An internal investigation found that many of these sponsors were receiving welfare. Some had criminal records.
