More Florida Residents Targeted With Deportation Action

Deportation

An increasing number of residents are facing deportation threats in Palm Beach County and across the Sunshine State. While critics protest these changes, authorities are moving ahead with deportation proceedings against a wider range of individuals. According to the latest reports, these include U.S.-born individuals and international students. What can you do if you face deportation in Palm Beach County? Can a Palm Beach deportation defense lawyer help?

Foreign Students Face Increased Deportation Threats in Florida

A new report from The Palm Beach Post states that campus police at Florida Atlantic University (FAU) have partnered with ICE to crack down on foreign students. The report notes that FAU has been very welcoming to foreign students over the years, and the school is home to many people who may become targets of ICE.

Apparently, FAU is one of the first public universities in the United States to actively participate with ICE in this regard. Under the new administration, law enforcement officials are legally required to cooperate with ICE. However, some law enforcement branches have been more active in this cooperation than others.

FAU has volunteered its campus police force to become deputies of ICE, a process that is now fully legal under the new administration. The goal of this new project is to identify students at FAU who might be “deportable.” Some of these individuals may be so-called “Dreamers,” while others may be foreign individuals studying on expired visas.

The Palm Beach Post notes that the new president of FAU was handpicked by Governor DeSantis and has a history of running a private prison company.

Increased Reports of U.S.-Born Individuals Facing Deportation

Another alarming report comes from the Florida Phoenix. This publication recently ran a story about a U.S.-born 20-year-old who was pulled over while traveling to Tallahassee. After being accused of breaking the speed limit, the man was taken into custody for entering Florida as an unauthorized alien. After about 24 hours in custody, he was released.

The judge presiding over this case had his Social Security card examined closely, as well as his birth certificate. Court officials were searching for any sign of inauthenticity. It is not clear whether this was a simple mistake, or whether so-called “anchor babies” are being subjected to higher levels of scrutiny. The current administration has spoken about ending birthright citizenship.
