Could I Be Deported to the Democratic Republic of Congo?

Deportation_

Third country deportations have become a controversial topic in US immigration law, and they seem to be continuing despite widespread criticism from numerous sources. A new immigration deal could see deportees sent to the Democratic Republic of Congo, even if they have no prior connection with the country. Could this happen to you? If you are asking yourself this question, you might want to contact an experienced immigration lawyer in Palm Beach County.

Congo Agrees to Accept Third Country Deportees

On April 5th, 2026, Al Jazeera reported that the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) had agreed to accept third-country deportees under a plan proposed by the US government. The deal will go into effect almost immediately, and the first deportees will arrive in Congo later in April. Although temporary, this deal will allow the DRC to receive payments for each deportee. The DRC, on the other hand, will reportedly incur no costs in processing these individuals.

As with all third-country deportations, the people arriving in Congo will almost certainly have zero connection with the country. For example, these deportees might be Mexican, El Salvadorian, or Chinese. Often, the United States uses this third-country deportation strategy when the “true” home nations of deportees refuse to take them back. The logic is that with no other way to get deportees out of the United States, the government is justified in sending them to faraway corners of the world.

Congo Joins a Growing List of Other Countries Participating in Third Country Deportations

Congo is the latest country to sign on to this program, and the full list of participating nations is extensive. As Third Country Deportation Watch states, this list includes countries like South Sudan, Uganda, Rwanda, Liberia, Ghana, and Cameroon. Many of these African nations aren’t exactly well-known for safety, and many migrants experience genuine fear after being shipped off to Africa.

Third-Country Deportations Face Serious Challenges in Court

As of this writing, the United States government is allowed to carry out third-country deportations. However, this practice is facing increasing levels of scrutiny in court. These legal battles are taking place not only in American courts, but also in the nations participating in third-country deportations. For example, legal groups in Uganda recently challenged the practice in their own courts. Aside from third-country deportations, legal advocacy groups are challenging many other immigration practices taken by the current administration.
