The United States Mulls New Immigration Deal

Immig4

A new immigration deal is on the table in the United States, and it’s not quite clear how this might affect people attempting to settle in Palm Beach County. In fact, it’s not exactly clear whether the new immigration deal will ever become law. It is tied up with numerous, complex, political issues – including the impending federal elections, wars halfway around the world, and even talks of secession in Texas. What do you need to know about this potential deal – and how might it affect your plans to settle in the United States?

Biden Signals Willingness to Accept More Conservative Approach to the Border

Faced with the prospect of losing funding for the Ukraine war, President Biden seems to be willing to accept a drastically more conservative approach to border security and immigration. This new strategy would be more in line with what Republicans have long been calling for, and USA Today calls the potential move a “seismic shift to the right.”

Perhaps the most notable statement from the President is a promise to completely “shut down the border” if Congress agreed on a deal to continue funding the Ukraine war. But what exactly would that look like for the average migrant or asylum seeker? The reference to a border shutdown sounds impressive – but it would only give the President the authority to close the border. There is no guarantee that he would ever exercise such a power – even when or if the border truly becomes overwhelmed.

The most notable effects would impact asylum seekers. Under the new deal, asylum at the border would be severely limited. Migrants who attempt to cross the border would be immediately sent back to Mexico in many cases. This expulsion would likely be mandatory, giving border authorities no choice but to eject migrants who attempt to cross the border.

Republicans May Not Even Want Biden to Accept the Deal

Somewhat confusingly, Republicans may not even want Biden to accept this new plan – even though it is exactly what they have been calling for. Because immigration is a key issue in the upcoming Presidential Elections, Republicans might want to use the crisis in their favor. With the so-called border crisis solved, they would lose this “ammunition” during debates and discussions in November.

Democrats seem surprisingly willing to put these immigration reforms into law. Many Democratic sanctuary cities are feeling the pressure from serious immigration influxes, and Democrats are coming under pressure from their own constituents. In addition, Biden seems very intent on continuing to fund the Ukraine war. The end result is a very confusing situation: One where Democrats seem to want tougher border reform more than Republicans.
