Immigration Detention Center Blaze Kills Dozens Of People

DeportationDefense

The southern border is reeling from yet another controversy. On March 28th, it was reported that dozens of migrants had lost their lives in a fire at a detention center. The number of reported casualties appears to be rising. An investigation has been launched, and some argue that the authorities could have done more to fight the blaze. What does this tell us about the state of the immigration system at the southern border? How can we prevent further tragedies like this?

What We Know About the Fire

The fire seems to have been set by the migrants themselves. Early reports state that these migrants set fire to their mattresses after fearing that they would soon be deported back to their home nations. The facility was holding almost 70 individuals from Central and South America, including Guatemala, El Salvador, and Venezuela. 28 out of the 39 casualties were Guatemalan.

There is also some indication that the guards themselves failed to prevent the fire, although the evidence is not concrete. Surveillance footage seems to show guards approaching the burning facility before running away without opening any of the doors and allowing the migrants to reach safety. Mexican authorities have promised to investigate the fire further. Along with the 39 dead, there are a further 28 people who are apparently battling serious injuries in hospital.

Why Did This Happen?

When you look at the obvious circumstance of the fire, the cause seems certain. The migrants themselves set fire to their mattresses. But one might argue that the cause was a sense of desperation among people who know that they were facing imminent deportation. The practice of holding migrants in Mexico has increased after the United States enacted tougher border control measures. People are now being encouraged to stay within their own countries when applying for asylum instead of physically traveling to the United States in order to claim refugee status. But the migrants keep coming, and many of them end up in facilities like the one that recently caught fire.

How Can We Avoid This Happening Again?

Migrants can avoid dangerous situations like these by working with qualified immigration lawyers. These individuals do not need to travel to Mexico or the southern border in order to pursue a potential life in the United States. Instead, they can work with immigration lawyers from their home nations – often meeting with these legal professionals virtually. In doing so, they can pursue a pathway to the United States without putting themselves in danger.
