Supreme Court Makes Major Decision on Birthright Citizenship

FlagGavel

Birthright citizenship has been a controversial topic since the new administration took office, and new changes have the potential to affect numerous immigrants in Palm Beach County and beyond. While the future of birthright citizenship in the United States is still somewhat unclear, a recent decision by the Supreme Court makes this outcome more certain. The country may need to adjust to a new reality where birthright citizenship no longer exists. Immigrants may wish to speak about the implications of this change with an immigration lawyer in Palm Beach County.

Supreme Court Green-Lights the End of Birthright Citizenship

In late June of 2025, NBC News reported that the Supreme Court had “handed a major victory” to the current administration by approving its plans to end birthright citizenship across the entire nation. In a 6-3 vote, the court decided that judges should have limited power to impose injunctions on this issue.

However, judges across the nation would not be completely powerless to push back against the loss of birthright citizenship – and the future of this situation isn’t exactly clear. Many legal groups and immigration lawyers have vowed to continue fighting in court, whatever happens. What’s clear is that federal courts will no longer have the power to push back against cases involving the loss of birthright citizenship. One option that still remains is the ability to file a class action lawsuit.

The exact consequences probably vary depending on the state. Some states are still resolving lawsuits involving this issue, while others seem more willing to back the current administration. Florida is one of the latter states, and this means that babies born in the Sunshine States may no longer get “automatic citizenship.” This has implications for not only the children themselves, but also their family members. That is, unless some kind of lawsuit is successful in Florida’s federal courts.

The Big, Beautiful Bill Looms

At the same time, the future of the “Big, Beautiful Bill” could affect many other aspects of immigration in the United States. As of this writing, it is not clear whether the Bill will pass. If it does, the administration would divert $150 billion to its mass deportation agenda, extend the border wall, create new detention centers, and hire thousands of new immigration officials.

Combined with the end of birthright citizenship, this bill could have major implications for the massive immigrant population in Florida. If you’re concerned by these new changes, it might be time to have a conversation with an experienced immigration lawyer.
